As of 2023, Deep Cycle Systems has expanded into the European market, distributing our most popular lithium batteries. With years of experience working with end users, government departments, designing vehicle fleet systems and working with OEM marine and RV manufacturers, we pride ourselves on our professionalism and dedication to our customers. DCS Battery Management System (BMS)

The DCS Battery Management System (BMS) project was initiated to address the shortcomings of basic Chinese-designed BMSs, which lacked features and programmability. The goal was to create a robust, reliable, and high-performance BMS capable of continuous high current pass through operation using high-quality components, minimal temperature increase at peak output, and suitable for engine cranking applications and high-temperature environments. The design also includes Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity for app integration into cloud server, OTA updates and passes MIL vibration testing standards.

Revolutionising Battery Management

After assessing the expertise of major leading manufacturers around the globe, we partnered with a leading Japanese semiconductor manufacturer. After three years of development, the first batch of BMSs was released across the 4S (12V) and 16S (48V) battery range in early 2018. An app development team was hired for software integration, leading to the release of the first GEN1 BLE DCS BMSs with Bluetooth chips in October 2019. The GEN2 BMSs, along with a more stable app platform, were released in mid-2020. The most recent GEN3 BLE BMSs were released in January 2021, featuring a mature and refined monitoring system and the ability to create custom battery names. The DCS BMS technology can now be produced in any continuous rating range from 10A to 300A.

DCS Cell Management System (CMS)

After developing a reliable and industry-leading Battery Management System (BMS), we decided to create a separate Cell Management System (CMS) to complement the BMS. The CMS was designed to address the limitations of passive cell balancing, which can lead to heat build-up and resistor failure, by implementing an active balancing technique. This technique efficiently redistributes charge between battery cells during charge and discharge cycles.

Advancing Cell Management

We tested various methods of active balancing and ultimately developed our own active management circuit boards, designed to handle high current movement, manage thermal shocks, and ensure long-term reliability with a fail-safe design.
Our latest CMS boards can manage up to 300Ah battery banks, and ensure the series cell connections remain in a tightly managed 10-50mV range.

All DCS battery electronics are sealed and fully submersible and designed to exceed IP68, which ensures they can spend several days fully submerged under water. This is crucial all battery electronics must be sealed. Regardless of the external cases IP design rating.

Rechargeable Lithium Battery – C Rating

In the battery world, the ‘C rate’ is a measure that describes how fast a battery is being charged or discharged. It is expressed in terms of the battery’s total capacity. For example, if a 1000mAh battery is being charged or discharged at a rate of 1000mA, we would say that it is being charged or discharged at a rate of 1C.

If the same battery were being charged at 500mA, this would be 0.5C, or if it were being charged at 2000mA, this would be 2C. Hence, the higher the C rate, the faster the battery is being charged or discharged.

However, it’s essential to note that not all batteries can handle high C rates. Charging or discharging a battery at a higher C rate than it can handle can result in reduced efficiency, overheating, and even damage to the battery. Therefore, it’s always important to ensure the battery’s C rate is suitable for its intended application.
